The Commercial Fishermen’s Cooperative... Where fresh is Best

The lure of surf and sand, the waft of coconut oil and the scrunch of salty hair is as much about the Australian coastal lifestyle as is the promise of eating great seafood. Is there any other food that speaks so clearly of place than seafood, especially if you can hear, see or smell the salty air of its former habitat? Fish - let me count the ways: cold, poached, pan-fried, deep-fried, barbecued or smoked.

Australians love their wild-caught seafood and the NSW coast, all 2137 kilometres of it, reveals an embarrassment of riches. The Commercial Fishermen’s Co-Operative located on Hannell Street in Wickham, is considered the most successful and most progressive co-operative in New South Wales and all their fresh seafood is caught locally by local fisherman.

Formed in 1945 to service the needs of the local commercial fishes, the co-op supplies local caught fresh seafood daily to Newcastle and surrounding areas as well as Sydney.Choose from their selection of fresh Atlantic Salmon, barramundi, blue eye travella, tuna, snapper, flathead, kingfish, ling, mult, ocean trout, ocean jacket and orange roughy – fillts or whole. Balmain bugs, blue swimmer crabs, squid, eastern rock lobsters, shrimp, mussels, scallops, clams, oysters….Is there no end to this piscatorial paradise?

The catches are consigned through one of the Co-operative’s seven receiving depots located at Gorokan, Tacoma, Swansea, Newcastle, Nelson Bay, Tea Gardens, and Bungwahl with the administration office being locaed at Hannell Street in Newcastle. The Fishermen’s Co-Operative is the best place to get the freshest seafood in Newcastle. Straight from the sea, to the boat, to you – the only way you could get fresher seafood is if you caught it yourself (and have you ever tried to catch a prawn?)
