When & Juliet arrives at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre this June, it brings with it the sparkle, spectacle and global reputation of one of the world’s most successful modern musicals.

Since premiering in London’s West End in 2019, the award-winning production has captivated audiences across the globe with its clever premise: what if Juliet didn’t die at the end of Romeo and Juliet?

Instead of tragedy, & Juliet reimagines Shakespeare’s heroine with a second chance at life, love and independence, all set to a soundtrack of chart-topping pop hits made famous by artists including Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Backstreet Boys and Kelly Clarkson.

Powered by the music of legendary songwriter and producer Max Martin and written by Emmy Award-winning Schitt’s Creek writer David West Read, the musical blends comedy, romance and contemporary storytelling into a high-energy theatrical experience that feels part concert, part musical and entirely joyful.

For Associate Producer Hayley Stoddart, the show’s emotional impact is what makes it special.

“It completely reimagines a story we all think we know and flips it into something modern, empowering and incredibly entertaining,” she says.

The Very Popular Theatre Company’s production features a cast blending exceptional local talent with national experience. Leading the company as Juliet is Hunter Drama alumna and NIDA graduate Anaiya Mahony, joined by a powerhouse cast including Rachel Parish, Marty Worrall, Jules Hewson and Tyler Chapman.

Director Lauren Harvey says the show offers audiences far more than nostalgia and pop spectacle.

“I first fell for the music and dance elements, but then I fell in love with the idea that we can write, or rewrite, our own stories,” Harvey says.

“At its heart, the show is about identity, independence and having the courage to rewrite your own story. It’s bold, funny and full of joy, but there’s also real emotional honesty underneath all the glitter and pop music.”

With dazzling choreography, beloved pop anthems and a story packed with heart, humour and reinvention, & Juliet promises to be one of Newcastle’s must-see theatre events of 2026.
