Youth in focus for Lake Macquarie

Young ones shouldn’t be afraid to live, laugh and sing their song in Lake Macquarie, after Council recommended its draft Youth Strategy 2025-2029 for approval at tonight’s Standing Committee meeting.
The plan outlines strategies and actions that reflect Council’s commitment to meet the needs and challenges facing young people in Lake Macquarie aged 12-24.
The creation of the draft strategy has been youth-led and developed through consultation with young people and those who work with and care about young people.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the strategy sought to ensure young people felt heard, represented and actively involved in shaping their communities.
“By providing opportunities and resources that help young people navigate their transition from education to employment, we create an environment where they can thrive, succeed and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.
“The Youth Strategy 2025-2029 outlines comprehensive initiatives to support young people engage with nature, prioritise their health and wellbeing and encourage civic participation.
“As Mayor, I’m proud of this strategy’s new annual Mayoral Rising Star Award for HSC achievers, promotion of the Education to Employment program and commitment to address cost-of-living challenges through partnerships with youth sector organisations advocating for government support.” Council also recommended 12 donations for approval under its Donations Program.
Recipients in line for $2,000 donations include Hunter Wildlife Rescue for portable roadside safety signage for koala rescue operations, Redhead Community Library for library materials and Orchestra Nova Inc. to buy a timpani drum.
Councillors approved a modification application for an approved resource recovery composting facility at 76 Nomad Road in Toronto, subject to new conditions of consent addressing environmental concerns.
The matter was before Council for a third time, following a Councillor site inspection and provision of further information.
