Young people from the Place Based Abilities Program share their knowledge, curiosity, and passion for the natural world.

The Placed to Speak podcast continues to celebrate the voices, passions, and growing confidence of young people in the Place Based Abilities Program, and Episode 5, Scales and Tales, is packed with curiosity, knowledge, and plenty of fun along the way.

Hosted by Jack, this episode features Chloe and Blake, two enthusiastic young learners with a shared fascination for reptiles. From the very beginning, their energy and excitement shine through as they dive into the world of snakes, lizards, and turtles with impressive knowledge and confidence.

Chloe explains that reptiles are “cold-blooded,” have scales, and can shed their skin, while Blake expands on how reptiles live, move, and survive. Together, they explore the differences between species, from legless snakes to four-legged lizards, and even the unique features of turtles and tortoises. Their ability to explain complex ideas in their own words is a powerful reflection of learning in action.

Beyond the facts, it’s their personal stories that bring the conversation to life. Chloe recalls a surprising moment when a green tree snake made its way into her home as a baby, while Blake shares an encounter with a blue-tongue lizard discovered in his garage. These moments highlight how learning connects to real-world experiences, building confidence and curiosity.

Both participants also share their future aspirations, with Chloe dreaming of becoming a vet or zoologist, and Blake hoping to work as a zookeeper. Their goals reflect not only their passion but also the opportunities created through programs that nurture their interests and abilities.

Delivered in partnership between The Place: Charlestown Community Centre and ReadyUp Skills, the Place Based Abilities Program supports young people with disabilities in building skills, confidence, and connection through meaningful activities such as podcasting.

Scales and Tales is a joyful and engaging listen, one that sparks curiosity, celebrates learning, and leaves you with a deeper appreciation for both reptiles and the incredible young people sharing their voices.
