In the latest episode of Placed to Speak, “Questions from the Hat,” a group of young people come together for a spontaneous, question driven conversation that is equal parts humorous, thoughtful, and deeply engaging. Hosted by Ricky, a program Skills Facilitator, the episode, features participants Morty, Tomas and Dom, young people aged 17–25 who are part of the Place Based Abilities program, a collaborative initiative between The Place Charlestown Community Centre and ReadyUp Skills.
What begins as a simple idea of drawing questions from a hat quickly evolves into something much more meaningful. The relaxed format allows personalities to shine, with plenty of laughter and playful moments — especially as the group debates everything from dream meals to favourite places in the world. But beyond the humour, there’s a genuine sense of connection and confidence in how each participant shares their thoughts.
Listeners gain insight into what inspires these young people, from iconic voice actors to comedy shows that spark creativity. These reflections highlight not only their interests but also emerging aspirations, showing how passion can shape future pathways. Whether it’s creating videos, exploring the outdoors, or dreaming of travel, each voice brings something unique to the conversation.
The episode also offers moments of deeper reflection. Conversations about the future reveal curiosity and awareness, with participants imagining everything from flying cars to the impact of technology on jobs. There’s also honesty in the way they talk about personal growth, in how opinions change over time, and in how new experiences shape who they are becoming.
Through Questions from the Hat, the impact of the Place-Based Abilities program is clear. By creating safe, inclusive spaces like this podcast, young people are supported to build confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of identity. More than simple participation, it’s about young people being heard and celebrated.
The result is a podcast episode that feels authentic, uplifting, and full of personality. Placed to Speak continues to showcase what’s possible when young people are given the opportunity to share their voices.
