Port Authority Walks its Way to Highly Commended at 2023 Business Hunter Awards

Port Authority of New South Wales has been recognised for innovation that impacts the wider community, with a Highly Commended at the 2023 Business Hunter Award for its interpretive walk and revitalisation of Newcastle’s iconic Macquarie Pier.
Port Authority of NSW’s CEO Captain Philip Holliday said he was thrilled with the acknowledgement in the ‘Excellence in Innovation’ category for Port Authority’s work restoring the walk and bringing to life the many stories linking Macquarie Pier to Newcastle’s unique history.
“Port Authority completed this project as part of our continued focus on improving our environment for the people of Newcastle and the Hunter and we are delighted to see how many people are visiting and using this special walk every day,” Captain Holliday said.
“It shows the power of storytelling and highlights the Hunter’s long and important connection with maritime and the sea.
“We wanted to create something that resonated with a wide range of listeners from locals to tourists and people of all ages. The immersive storytelling brings people and significant moments in history to life in a way that we hope is memorable and will help carry this history forward for generations to come.”
The immersive tour was born following Port Authority’s $1.85 million revitalisation of Macquarie Pier. It received recognition with a Highly Commended at this year’s National Trust Heritage Awards.
“Congratulations to all finalists and winners. The awards are a fantastic way to acknowledge projects and initiatives that are creating and maintaining a thriving Hunter region,” Captain Holliday said.
