New citywide plans support growth and infrastructure delivery in Lake Macquarie

Two new citywide development contribution plans, to help fund essential local infrastructure that supports the city’s growth, have been adopted at tonight’s Council meeting.   

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the Section 7.12 Citywide Development Contributions Plan, which applies to commercial development, would help boost infrastructure, support services and enhance the city’s growth. 

“Lake Macquarie’s population is forecast to increase by more than 28,000 people by 2039,” Mayor Adam said.

“It’s crucial everyone is playing their part to create a city that not only meets the needs of our growing community but continues to be a place where people and businesses thrive for generations to come.” 

The Section 7.11 Citywide Development Contributions Plan levies residential development including housing subdivisions and multiple dwelling developments. 

This includes a development contribution discount of 100% for social and affordable housing for the next two years.  

“Shared cycleways, footpaths, recreational, sporting and emergency service facilities, facility upgrades, and library resources are just some of infrastructure and services that will be provided as a result of this plan.” 

“At the housing forum, we heard loud and clear that Council needs to use the levers it has available to attract developments that increase housing diversity and address housing needs in Lake Macquarie. This includes introducing a lower per person levy for strategic urban infill development.”  

The plan relates to development anticipated from 2025-2039 and is proposed to be reviewed every four years.  

“It is important that we can keep pace with the proposed growth while maintaining the quality of life and connection that make Lake Macquarie such a special place to live.” 

Councillors also recommended approving 14 donations totalling more than $24,500 in round two of requests under the Donations Program to applicants including Survivor’s R Us, Afghan Cultural Association of Newcastle, Hunter Animal Watch and Edgeworth Scout Group.  

“It’s great to be supporting not-for-profit organisations that are doing amazing work in our city,” Mayor Adam said.  

Councillors recommended approving the Lake Macquarie Flooding, Sea Level Rise and Tidal Inundation Policy for adoption.  

This policy aims to helps Council and the community plan and respond to flooding and sea level rise.
