Approximately 1,000 young athletes will converge on Maitland next year following the selection of Maitland Regional Athletics Centre to host the Little Athletics NSW State Combined Carnival on 5-6 March 2022.

Over 80 events will be taking place across the two day event in one of the first major events confirmed to take place at the world class venue since opening in September 2020.

The Carnival is a fun and exciting sports event that while still competitive, focuses on children and youth taking part in all types of events rather than just a few that require qualification.

Mayor of Maitland, Loretta Baker says, ‘We’re so excited to host the State Combined Carnival of Little Athletics at the Maitland Regional Athletics Centre in 2022.

‘It’s a testament to the high quality of our facilities that we’re capable of hosting great events such as this, and we look forward to welcoming so many promising young sportspeople.’

Little Athletics NSW CEO Rebecca Shaw says, ’Maitland is the perfect location and venue to host the State Combined Carnival in 2022.

‘This Carnival is one of the feature events on the Little Athletics NSW calendar and we are confident that our athletes, their families, spectators, officials and coaches, that come from all over the state, will enjoy the experience and a family focused weekend away.’ Little Athletics is a uniquely Australian sport for children aged 5-16 years.

The events are specially modified to suit the ages and abilities of children and has a wide range of running, jumping, throwing and walking events. It offers young people activities and skills that will stand them in good stead for their sporting future. Registrations for the Carnival will open later in the year.

Any young athlete who is a registered member of a Little Athletics Centre can register. To learn more about the Maitland Regional Athletics Centre, visit maitland.nsw.gov.au To find out more about Little Athletics and how to join a Centre, visit lansw.com.au
