Empowering women to “take back the streets” and feel safe in our community will be the focus of a family-friendly event on Warners Bay foreshore on Friday 24 October.
Reclaim the Night will feature live entertainment, including Aboriginal dance performances, live drumming demonstrations, a BBQ, lawn games and the centrepiece community march for safer streets.
Part of a global movement that began in Leeds in 1977, Reclaim the Night aims to empower women and demand safer streets for all.
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Community Partnerships Matt Holloway said support services such as Nova for Women and Children, Survivors R Us and CALM would attend, offering resources and connection for those impacted by violence.
“This event is a vital platform for awareness and change,” he said.
“It stands as a powerful protest against gender-based violence and a celebration of resilience, solidarity and hope.”
“We want women to feel safe in all places in the community and Reclaim the Night provides an empowering opportunity for women to take back the streets.”
The 5.30-7.30pm event also marks the lead-up to the 16 Days of Activism Yarn Tree Wrapping display, launching Tuesday 25 November at Warners Bay and Friday 28 November in Toronto, in partnership with Zonta, spreading messages of recognition, response and action against violence.
