Maitland residents are being invited to have their say on a citywide pathway project, with new designs for the Morpeth to Walka shared pathway now on public exhibition.
Designed to improve connectivity and encourage more active transport, the approximately 15km pathway will link key destinations across the city including Rutherford, Walka Water Works, Central Maitland, East Maitland and Morpeth.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold says the project “will enhance Maitland’s pathway network and be a game changer for thousands of residents.”
“We’re proud to progress the Morpeth to Walka shared pathway project to the next stage and once complete, it will connect several Maitland hotspots and serve our community for many years to come.”
Following community feedback on the initial designs in 2024, Maitland City Council conducted an in-depth assessment and revised the proposed route.
Mayor Penfold says Council "will continue working with the community to deliver the best possible outcome for the people of Maitland."
“We’re committed to building a safe network of pathways and cycleways across Maitland, so we can achieve our shared vision of a connected city with thriving communities.”
Early stages of the project were completed in previous years, including the Illalung Park to Robert Street path, the Steamer Street path and the Morpeth Road loop at Morpeth, as well as an extension of The Levee shared path from Hunter to Bella Street, Horseshoe Bend.
Residents can have their say on the new proposed route until Tuesday 7 October, before a final report is made to Council.
