To mark Mental Health Month this October, Maitland City Council will host a free community screening of the documentary The Promise on Thursday 30 October from 6pm at Reading Cinemas, Maitland.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring mental health advocate Craig Hamilton, filmmaker Jye Currie, Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold and a local mental health professional.

The Promise tells the personal and inspiring story of Craig Hamilton; a former ABC sports broadcaster diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2000. The documentary follows his journey of resilience and recovery, and includes insights from prominent Australians such as journalist Jessica Rowe, former NRL player and Newcastle Knights great Paul Harragon, mental health advocates Joe Williams and Bailey Seamer, world champion boxer Tim Tszyu and rugby league coach Wayne Bennett.

Mayor Philip Penfold said Council is proud to host the event and support meaningful conversations about mental health in the community.

“Mental health affects many families across Maitland, and events like this help to break down the stigma that too often surrounds these issues,” Mayor Penfold said.

“This free screening will give our community an opportunity to hear powerful stories of resilience and recovery, and to be part of a conversation that can make a positive difference in people’s lives.”

October is an important time to raise awareness of mental health in our community. According to the Black Dog Institute, one in five Australians aged 16 to 85 experience a mental illness each year, and nearly half will experience a mental illness in their lifetime.

Reflecting on the purpose and impact of the film, Director Jye Currie said, "I understand the possible risk when making a film like this, but if I let risk stop me; Australia would still be waiting for a suicide prevention film.

“The Promise is more than just a documentary; it is a call to action. It’s about confronting the uncomfortable truths of mental health and suicide in Australia and ensuring that no conversation is left unheard.”

Tickets are free, but bookings are essential and can be made through Eventbrite. For more information and to book, visit mait.city/ThePromiseScreening
