Emerging Artists Making Their Own Way at Lighthouse Arts

intouch Magazine

A Regent Pair by Siarn Staley.

This weekend, Lighthouse Arts Newcastle will immerse itself in a refreshing perspective on creativity as our local youth take the lead in shaping their own artistic journeys in our exciting new exhibition: Making Our Own Way.

Curated by Indigenous Artist and Emerging Curator, Siarn Staley, Making Our Own Way embodies the commitment of young artists to carve out their existence centred around their art. For these emerging artists and writers under the age of thirty, being an artist and nurturing their creativity takes precedence, with everything else falling into place around it.

Siarn Staley expressed her vision for the exhibition, saying, ‘This exhibition is a celebration of a young artist’s ability to consistently create, despite time constraints, professional commitments, family responsibilities, and more. These artists are exceptionally talented individuals who are truly “making their own way”. It's a unique opportunity to witness their stories, struggles, triumphs—and their art—as they navigate their commitment to being an artist, despite the challenges of balancing a career outside the art world.’

Featured emerging artists include Kimberly Brown, Indeah Clark, Ky Emerton, Nick Howley, Winona Summerville, Emma Wilks, and Siarn Staley.

Featured emerging writers are Anna Seymour, Kate Teal-Spicer, and Lily Thomson.

Making Our Own Way is located at Nobbys-Whibayganba Headland and is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, 10am — 4pm, from Saturday 7th October to Sunday 3rd December, 2023. Admission is free. Learn more at https://lighthousearts.org.au/events/
