Dr Karl set to headline Living Smart Festival

He has spent more than 45 years making sense of science for everyday Aussies and now Dr Karl Kruszelnicki is set to share his wisdom with Lake Macquarie.
The author, communicator and winner of the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularisation of Science will headline this year’s Living Smart Festival in September, explaining how we got into the climate crisis and how we can get out.
Dr Karl will also debunk common climate myths during his presentation, to be followed by a 45-minute Q&A with the audience.
Lake Macquarie City Council Sustainability Engagement Coordinator Zoe Johnson said Dr Karl would join a host of other presenters and experts covering a diversity of sustainability themes.
“Dr Karl is a household name in Australia for his ability to tackle tricky scientific subjects and explain them in a way that anyone can understand,” she said.
“It will be an honour to welcome him to this year’s Living Smart and learn more about climate change, how it works and what measures we can take to address it.”
The 20 September event will mark Living Smart’s 14th instalment, featuring talks, presentations, workshops, demonstrations, live entertainment and market stalls.
The day will also include an ‘electrification panel’, featuring Rewiring Australia, Jet Charge and Electrify This.
“The whole reason for the festival’s existence is to promote sustainable living through connecting with our environment and considering our consumption behaviours at home and work,” Ms Johnson said.
Applications are now open for stallholders who align with the Living Smart ethos to participate in this year’s festival.
“We’re keen to work with stallholders who ‘walk the talk’ with their commitment to sustainability,” Ms Johnson said.
“People who source their products and services locally, who avoid waste and single-use items, who recycle and upcycle and who showcase and protect our environment.”
This year’s festival is sponsored by Greater Bank, Hunter Resource Recovery, University of Newcastle, Hunter Water, Solo Resource Recovery and Source Separation Systems.
