Local hospitality businesses will find it easier to set up outdoor dining, as Council rolls out its new Outdoor Dining Policy.

The policy has been developed in response to the discontinuation of Service NSW’s state-led Outdoor Dining Trial and Program and introduces a new streamlined permit system through MyCouncil, supporting hospitality businesses by reducing red tape and speeding up approvals while keeping public spaces safe, accessible and welcoming.

Council encourages businesses that already offer outdoor dining, or are looking to grow their business, to take advantage of the simplified permit process and benefit from an introductory incentive: Council will waive the one-off $145 application fee for the next six months.

Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said the new policy will support local businesses in expanding their footprint and catering to more customers, especially in the warmer months.

“Outdoor dining adds life to our streets and gives the community more opportunities to enjoy our cafes, restaurants and bars,” Mayor Penfold said.

“Businesses can now set up outdoor dining more easily, while Council ensures public spaces remain safe and accessible for everyone.”

Director City Planning Trevor Ryan said the policy aligns with recent NSW Government Vibrancy Reforms, and provides a clear, practical framework for businesses.

“This approach supports local hospitality and will help create more vibrant and liveable precincts across Maitland,” Mr Ryan said.

The policy sets out clear requirements for public liability insurance, pedestrian access, and liquor licensing where relevant.

It is one of the many initiatives to be rolled out in line with Maitland’s new Economic Development Strategy.
