The loveable, shaggy creature who captured hearts across Australia is being celebrated at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) in a delightful retrospective exhibition honouring Ted Prior's iconic creation, Grug.

Running from 20 September to 15 November, this major exhibition traces the imaginative journey of Australia's most cherished children's book character. First sprouting from a Burrawang tree in the Australian bush in 1979, Grug became a literary phenomenon with his gentle humour, insatiable curiosity, and clever problem-solving adventures that continue to enchant young readers today.

The heart-warming display features original illustrations and storyboards by Newcastle region artist Ted Prior, alongside captivating puppets from the renowned Windmill Theatre Company. Visitors will gain fascinating insights into the creative process behind the beloved series that shaped countless childhoods.

Adding to the magic, interactive workshops invite families to unleash their creativity. The "Make Your Own Grug Plush" sessions and "DIY Dropin Felt Finger Puppets" workshops offer young visitors the perfect opportunity to craft their own Grug-inspired treasures to take home.

The official opening promises to be a memorable family event on Saturday, 27 September from 12pm to 2pm. This free celebration includes engaging activities, refreshments, and a special highlight: a book signing with Ted Prior himself. Families are encouraged to RSVP at mypacc.com.au for this not-to-be-missed occasion.

"Grug transcends being merely a children's character—he's become a true cultural icon,” said Joseph Turrin, PACC Exhibitions Coordinator.

“We're honoured to celebrate Ted Prior's enduring legacy and his remarkable contribution to generations of Australian readers. This exhibition serves as a joyful tribute to a small character with an enormous heart."

This rare opportunity invites visitors to dive deep into Grug's delightful world while exploring the magic of storytelling, artistic creativity, and uniquely Australian imagination. The exhibition promises to evoke nostalgia in parents while introducing a new generation to the timeless charm of this character.
