Having recently taken out the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year category at the Hunter & Central Coast Regional Training Awards, 47-year-old James ‘Poncho’ Barry will now be representing the community at next Thursday’s (11 September) NSW Training Awards in Sydney.
Following nearly 20 years in the tourism industry, the Cessnock local decided to further his education to improve experiences for travelers. In order to complete his studies, Poncho balanced five jobs, travelled more than an hour to TAFE, all the while raising his kids and grandchild.'
Now working at Balloon Aloft Hunter Valley, Poncho creates engaging experiences for visitors and thoroughly researches the Hunter Valley region’s history, from its wineries and Indigenous heritage to key industries like coal and mining. His storytelling ensures guests leave with a deep appreciation of the region.
Presented by Department of Education’s Training Services, the NSW Training Awards recognise outstanding achievement in the vocational education and training sector, with this year marking the 70th anniversary for the awards.
Winners from the event will go on to represent NSW in their respective categories as they are considered for the 2025 Australian Training Awards in Darwin on 5 December.
