$7 Million Sport and Entertainment Precinct Now Open in Central Maitland

A multi million dollar sport and entertainment precinct has officially opened at Harold Gregson Reserve in Central Maitland, under the fourth and final stage of the Maitland Regional Sports Complex redevelopment.
Jointly funded by the NSW Government in association with Maitland City Council, this $7 million project includes a new playspace, full sized basketball court, and skate park.
An amenities block, picnic shelter, RV parking and electric vehicle charging stations have also been added, with an events lawn and amphitheatre set to open next year.
Mayor Philip Penfold says these upgrades have created a unique space for the community to connect, play, and be active.
‘Harold Gregson Reserve is the final piece of the puzzle in the Maitland Regional Sports Complex redevelopment, which has transformed the eastern end of Central Maitland into a state of the art precinct that our community can enjoy for years to come,’ Mayor Penfold said.
General Manager Jeff Smith says Council and the NSW Government have invested $27 million into the Maitland Regional Sports Complex, which is giving the town centre a ‘new lease of life.’
‘The Athletics Centre and upgraded sportsground are part of our wider efforts to revitalise Central Maitland, alongside other projects like our new Administration Centre, upgrades to the Town Hall and installing new infrastructure and trees for people to enjoy,’ Mr Smith said.
‘High Street is quickly becoming the place to be, with sport, cultural and entertainment opportunities aplenty and Harold Gregson is a large part of that.’
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the NSW Government contributed $3 million towards the Reserve upgrade through the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program and an additional $2.7 million through the Resources for Regions Program.
‘These investments will help transform Harold Gregson Reserve into a youth and events hub which will be a fantastic asset to the Maitland community,’ Mr Scully said.
Member for Maitland and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Jenny Aitchison says ‘Maitland is the largest growing regional city in NSW.’
‘This latest $5.7 million investment by the NSW Government will make the city more liveable and further revitalise the centre of Maitland. I look forward to seeing young families and visitors to Maitland enjoy this amazing space for many years to come.’
