Shared pathway to take shape at Brightwaters

Construction work on 1.1km of shared pathway along Bay Vista Road at Brightwaters will start next week.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser said the 3m-wide shared pathway would provide a safe place for people to get outdoors, exercise and commute.

“Our City offers cycling enthusiasts and pedestrians a growing number of paths and routes to explore,” Cr Fraser said.

“This shared pathway will provide a connection for pedestrians and cyclists from Bonnells Bay to Brightwaters, linking to the Morisset to Bonnells Bay shared path.

“The continued extension of the shared path network provides opportunities for our community to be active and lead a healthier lifestyle.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro thanked Lake Macquarie City Council for its commitment to supporting healthy lifestyles and recreation.

“We know all too well right now how important outdoor exercise is and these new pathways will allow people to get their fill of fitness while keeping safe,” Mr Barilaro said.

“This is exactly the kind of project the Stronger Country Communities Fund is designed to deliver, projects, upgrades and amenities that make a big difference to everyday life.

”The shared pathway follows a successful grant application made by Council for the project to the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.

In 2020-2021, Council is forecast to spend $6.4 million on footpaths and cycleways, including $1 million towards the start of construction of the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track and $1.9 million to construct the next stage of the Glendale to Speers Point shared pathway.

Works will start on Monday 17 August and are expected to be completed in February 2021, weather permitting. The project is proudly funded by the NSW Government and Council.
