On The Music Scene | It's a Musical Summer!

The announcement that Jason Donovan and Myf Warhurst were part of the 50th Anniversary production of Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Picture Show gave me flashbacks.
That was one of the first big stage shows that really stands out in my memory. But if you can't wait until February for a bit of tongue-in-cheek musical fun, you are in luck.
The Civic Theatre Playhouse will play host to Heathers the Musical, based on the classic 1989 film. If it's been a while since you have seen it or this is your first introduction, the original starred Christian Slater, Winona Ryder and Shannon Doherty. Westerberg High is ruled by a shoulderpadded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruellest girls in all of Ohio. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place - six feet under. For a show that is about getting rid of your friends, it really is very entertaining!
For those who want a familiar face with their musical entertainment, Velvet Rewired, featuring the iconic Marcia Hines, will be here in April.
It's a coming-of-age story set in the subtle surroundings of a nightclub that is a blend of Studio 54 and a circus performance. As it turns out, Marcia will be back on the small screen soon as well, with her return as a guest judge on the new Australian Idol locked in recently. The Queen of disco has helped find some of this country's best talent, including Rob Mills, who is currently starring in Hairspray, which opens in Sydney in February. Jessica Mauboy has also proved she can carry a musical-based storyline with the best of them starring in Sapphires and Bran Nue Dae.
