COSY UPdate Your Space for Autumn

With the cooler months approaching, it is a great time to switch the colour palettes in your interiors and prepare for the months when you want to feel cosy with an injection of new colour. Not every item needs to be changed; just select pieces can be updated to freshen a space for the coming season.

Don’t be afraid of colour – no matter the season. Colour doesn’t have to mean bright pops. We love the use of navy and hunter greens. These deep colours can be lightened or darkened by what is around it. Using autumnal colours such as browns, ambers and bronzes in accessories subdues these rich colours while bringing a classic and timeless feel perfect for cosying up in.

We’re seeing a braver use of colour in larger pieces such as curtains and bedheads. These are a great way to inject colour. Consider charcoal grass weave wallpaper, deep navy curtains behind a dark green leather lounge and bronze accent pieces, for example. This combination is nothing overly bold, just layers the space with complementary colours that aren’t all part of the neutral spectrum. As long as you think about the combination of the colours and pieces as a whole within the space, you can afford to bring these colours into the home.

If you have the main furniture pieces in your home, consider updating or adding to your art collection. Art is an important aspect of any space and changing it is a great way to update seasonally. Not only can the pieces themselves be changed, but the arrangement of them too. You can mix new with the existing pieces, canvases with framed prints. Mix frame types and sizes. Change the frames, especially if they’ve been the same for ten plus years. Your artworks will be revitalised, and you may actually look at them in a new light. We see a lot of pieces where the artwork’s frame draws the focus due to the matting being coloured and the frame being very detailed or coloured. In some cases, a simple change to a white matting and a black frame draws the focus back to the piece itself, allows it to be repositioned in the space, bringing a fresh eye to the loved piece. What was once old and ignored is new again!

With cooler months we often think of warming up with blankets throws. Why not Rug Up too? Rugs on the ground are a great insulator, so a great practical piece as the temperature drops. Keep in mind the size of a rug (bigger is always better!) and what you could do with this large canvas. If using colour within the furniture or walls is too bold for you, why not consider the rug as an artwork for the floor? The horizontal plane means it is distorted and the level of it is not in your face. You can bring in these deep hues that can be brought out in a beautiful rug, either ready-made or a custom piece.

Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of changing simple elements. In Spring, we think of beautiful florals and blooms. In Autumn and Winter, the leaves coming down and bare branches come to mind. Gather some of these branches, put them in a vase, and be amazed at your own creativeness when you see the effect they create. You can mix these in with sprigs of greenery or red berry branches (there are some amazing fake ones available) to bring an element of colour in too. It’s a great way to get height on a console display or bring a natural element to a table arrangement. And the best bit? No petals or pollen to clean up!
