Tickets for the Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest 2026 go on sale Monday 2 March, with two of New South Wales’ most celebrated steam locomotives confirmed to headline this year’s ARTC Rail Program.
Maitland will come alive on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April as locomotives 3265 and 3526 take centre stage, offering heritage rail journeys and the adrenaline-charged Great Train Race, while celebrating the region’s rich rail history.
Steamfest Chairperson Councillor Ken Jordan said securing these iconic locomotives marks a major milestone in planning the 2026 program, ensuring visitors will enjoy an authentic and memorable experience.
“Steamfest is a cornerstone event for Maitland and the Hunter region, celebrating the vital role rail has played in shaping our community,” Cr Jordan said.
“The event attracts thousands of visitors to Maitland each year, delivering significant economic benefits to local businesses and reinforcing our reputation as a vibrant events destination.
“Tickets to the ARTC Rail Program are always in high demand, so we encourage train-goers to plan ahead and book early when sales open on 2 March.”
Locomotive 3265, built in 1902 in Manchester, is the only surviving example of its class to retain its original low frame. This striking maroon engine will operate journeys to Branxton and feature in the eagerly anticipated Great Train Race.
Joining it is 3526, affectionately known as ‘Nanny’ and part of the Transport Heritage NSW collection. Built in 1917, this green locomotive will travel to Port Waratah and Paterson before lining up alongside 3265 in the Race.
Rail journey ticket prices range from $35 to $92 depending on the experience, while diesel favourites, including the CPH ‘Tin Hares’ and the restored 621/721 Rail Motor, fondly known as the ‘Red Rattler’, offer an affordable and accessible way for families to enjoy Steamfest, with tickets from $12 to $45.
Burton Automotive has reaffirmed its commitment as the naming rights sponsor for 2026, continuing a long-standing partnership with one of the region’s most anticipated events.
Dealer Principal Burton Automotive Group Joshua Walker said, “Norm Burton Senior OAM of Burton Automotive Group has been a proud supporter of Steamfest for many years and has always said that in order to move towards the future, it is incredibly important to understand where we came from.
“Steam-powered trains were a lifeblood to community and industry in and around Maitland, and Steamfest does a fantastic job of showcasing this to our younger generations.”
Beyond the ARTC Rail Program, Steamfest offers a range of heritage and family-friendly experiences across Maitland. The Bloomfield Steam Rally, coordinated by the Maitland Steam and Antique Machinery Association, at the Garnham Grounds, will showcase antique machinery and working steam engines from across Australia, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the history of engineering in action.
On Saturday evening, Steamfest After Dark will bring the city to life with live music, food vendors, on-platform opportunities to explore the steam locomotives up close and entertainment suitable for all ages. On Sunday 19 April, the Show ‘n’ Shine in Maitland Park will feature more than 500 classic vehicles alongside food and live performances.
