Get ready to kick off your Sunday shoes — one of the most beloved musicals of the '80s is heading to Civic Theatre Newcastle this May, and it's bigger, bolder, and more electric than ever.

Footloose: The Musical arrives in Newcastle from 14 to 24 May 2026 as part of a national Australian tour that follows a completely sold-out season in Melbourne. Better still, this is the first time Australia has seen a professional production of Footloose in over 20 years, making it a genuinely special occasion for musical theatre fans.

Based on the iconic 1984 film, the story follows Ren McCormack, a city kid who moves to a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned. What unfolds is a joyful, emotionally rich journey about youth, freedom, and the courage to stand up for what you believe in. It's the kind of show that brings generations together — whether you danced along to the film the first time around, or you're discovering the story fresh.

The fully remastered production is packed with the hits that made the original a cultural phenomenon: the anthemic title track, Footloose; the soaring Holding Out for a Hero; the sweet Almost Paradise; and the irresistible Let's Hear It for the Boy. Add to that electrifying choreography and standout performances from a cast of sizzling Australian talent, and you've got a night out that's near impossible not to enjoy.

From high-energy ensemble numbers to quieter, heartfelt moments, the show strikes a careful balance between fun and genuine feeling. There's real heart underneath the neon and the nostalgia, a story about a community finding its way back to joy, and a reminder of why music and movement matter.

This is live theatre at its most crowdpleasing; the kind of production that has audiences on their feet and leaving the theatre with a smile that lingers long after the curtain falls. Whether you're planning a night out with friends, a family outing, or simply after a brilliant live show, Footloose: The Musical delivers pure entertainment with a whole lot of heart.

Footloose: The Musical plays Civic Theatre Newcastle from 14–24 May 2026. Tickets at www.footloosethemusical.com/newcastle.
