Over 3000 local families doing their bit for native wildlife

Thousands of Lake Mac residents have helped keep local flora and fauna safe in their gardens as part of the Backyard Habitat for Wildlife program.

The past decade has seen more than 3000 households join the initiative to help provide wildlife-friendly environments and observe, protect and enhance the City’s natural areas.

Lake Macquarie City Council Sustainability Engagement Officer Margo Smith said it was important to start conversations about nature and conservation.

“With World Environment Day coming up on Saturday 5 June, it’s a good time to reflect and take the opportunity to celebrate Lake Mac’s diverse environment, while also focusing on protecting it,” Ms Smith said.

“Joining the Backyard Habitat for Wildlife program is a great way for the community to appreciate the local environment in which we live.”

Residents are also encouraged to join a community of over 400,000 scientists and naturalists aimed at bringing nature, quality data and the community together.

“An online environmental initiative known as iNaturalistallows anyone to share observations, identify and discuss species and create data for science and conservation,” Ms Smith said.

“By recording and sharing findings on iNaturalist, you’ll help scientists better understand and protect our beautiful environment.”

Lake Macquarie has had 10,485 observations made and 1801 species recorded by 401 observers through iNaturalist.
