Opportunity to turn showground into major events venue

Establishing Morisset Showground as a regionally significant events venue capable of holding major festivals and events is among the options outlined in a new Council document aimed at guiding the site’s future.

The Issues and Opportunities Paper now on display for public feedback was drafted following community consultation last year, gauging the community’s priorities for the showground site, which has been in use since 1936.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Assets Management Brendan Callander said the showground boasted the size, location and access to transport links to support local and regional events.

“This opportunity presents a need to plan and establish spaces within the showground that can be adapted to meet event needs,” he said.

Other uses of the site up for public feedback include community and sporting use, equestrian and related activities, camping, tourism and recreation.

“The Issues and Opportunities Paper, together with community feedback about the document, will help inform our preparation of a Master Plan and Plan of Management for the Morisset Showground site,” Mr Callander said.

“So far, we’ve heard loud and clear from the community a desire to focus on the showground’s core use as a venue for the annual Morisset Show, while increasing everyday activity and value of this important public space.”

“I’d encourage everyone in the community to complete our online survey on the showground’s future, or attend one of two drop-in sessions we’re hosting next month.”

The drop-in sessions will be held Monday 1 March 5-7pm and Tuesday 2 March noon-2pm at Morisset Showgrounds.
