FUNDING FOR PROJECTS HONOURING HUNTER VETERANS

Hunter groups can apply for $2,000 grants for projects supporting local veterans or boosting awareness of their role throughout Australia’s military history.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said applications are now open for the Anzac Community Grants Program and urged local organisations to apply for funding.

“Veterans past and present served to keep us safe and this is a great chance to recognise their sacrifices, while enriching our communities,” Mr Martin said.

“We’re seeking projects that not only recognise the important service of our veterans but also educates future generations about their sacrifices.”

Grants cover four categories: local community historical research and education; preservation or display of war memorabilia; public commemorative events, arts and culture; and support to members of the NSW veteran community.

Applications are open to individuals and not-for-profit organisations including local government authorities, non-government organisations, ex-service organisations and educational institutions.

Just over 40 projects were selected in 2020, including a replica battlefield trench for high school students, a digital gallery of 600 photos and beach lifesaving training.

Minister for Veterans Natalie Ward said the grants program is one way the NSW Government is addressing key areas including wellbeing, education and recognition.

“This is an opportunity to get projects off the ground, at a grassroots level across many communities,” Mrs Ward said.

“Our veteran community grows by around 1,200 former Australian Defence Force personnel every year and we need to empower them to live fulfilling lives after service.”

The annual Anzac Community Grants Program has injected almost $250,000 across nearly 180 projects since its inception in 2015.
