Learn to skate sessions, colour runs, and mural painting are among a suite of interactive activities happening across Lake Macquarie this Youth Week.

From Thursday 20 April to Sunday 30 April, young people aged 12 to 24 will have the opportunity to connect with their community and get to know each other.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Community Partnerships Andrew Bryant said this year’s program was all about new experiences.

“We want our young people to try something they wouldn’t normally do, whether that be jumping on a skateboard, pulling out a paintbrush, or tackling an epic obstacle course,” he said.

“Everyone can get out of their comfort zones a bit, around others who are learning too.”

Grundy Skateboarding will hold three free learn to skate sessions around the lake, for people of all abilities and skill levels.

Mr Bryant said the sessions complemented a full program of activities encouraging young people to express themselves.

“This is a celebration of our young people,” he said.

“We want them to know they are valued and heard, by giving them the opportunity to voice ideas without judgement.”

“It might sound cliché, but these people really are our next leaders and we want them to know we recognise how important their perspectives are.”
