People gather around a mobile info booth at a park. A sign reads "Come and say Hi!" A dog is nearby. Sunny day with tents in the background.

More than 1500 volunteers making Lake Macquarie a better place have been hailed as the unsung heroes of their local communities.

Coinciding with National Volunteer Week, Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said volunteers supported a wide range of programs across the city, including in Landcare groups, at cultural venues and even at cemeteries.

“Council benefits from this army of multi-skilled, vibrant volunteers, but even more importantly our community benefits even more,” he said.

“Volunteers selflessly contribute their time to do everything from assisting with literacy programs at our libraries to rehabilitating bushland throughout our suburbs.”

Council will host a celebration to thank volunteers on to Tuesday 27 May at Windale Hub, bilyabayi.

It will also host a 5.30-6.30pm drop-in information session on Tuesday 20 May at Warners Bay Theatre, baramayiba, for people interesting in volunteering.

“Feedback we receive from our volunteers tells us that volunteers often get as much out of it as the people they so kindly assist,” Mayor Adam said.

“It’s a social outlet, it offers the chance to stay active and engaged with the community, and it allows people to share their passion and expertise with others.”

More information about the volunteer drop-in session can be found at Eventbrite.com.au.
