Two children with fairy wings and antennas look up with wonder in a magical garden. Vibrant flowers and a starry night sky surround them.

When a backyard construction project threatens an entire insect community, the bugs decide it’s time to fight back.

Hunter Drama is bringing the battle to the stage with The Bugs, a riotous comedy by acclaimed American playwright Don Zolidis that blends ecological chaos, labour disputes, and a dash of Greek mythology into a fast-paced theatrical adventure.

Packed with clever jokes, outrageous situations, and inventive staging, The Bugs delivers big laughs while exploring themes of teamwork, community, and environmental responsibility. It’s a playful reminder that even the smallest creatures can make a big difference when they band together.

When a pair of disgruntled honeybees discover their habitat is about to be destroyed to make way for a swimming pool, they set out to unite the insects of the yard to stop human construction. But when their plans start to unravel, they may have to turn to their ancient enemies, the spiders, for help.

Director Evelyn Parkes, marking her first full play as a director, says the show has been a joy to bring to life.

“The Bugs is clever, hilarious, and unlike any show we’ve done,” Parkes says. “Our cast of 33 performers aged 9 to 14 have thrown themselves into these wonderfully imaginative roles with incredible energy. We even have five sets of siblings performing together, which makes it a really special experience for families as well as audiences.”

Playwright Don Zolidis is widely recognised as one of the most-produced playwrights in the world, particularly in youth and educational theatre. Known for his witty humour, clever wordplay, and inventive storytelling, Zolidis creates work that allows young performers to stretch their comedic and dramatic skills while entertaining audiences of all ages.

“The students have embraced every moment of it,” Parkes adds. “The energy, dedication, and sense of fun they bring to the stage is infectious, and I can’t wait for audiences to see what they’ve created.”

The Bugs runs approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, including interval, at Hunter Drama in Newcastle from 14–24 May 2026. Tickets are $59, with savings available for families and groups: a four-ticket bundle is $42.50 per ticket, or Hunter Drama subscribers can purchase tickets for $49 each when booking two or more shows.

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind theatrical experience, buzzing with humour, heart, and theatrical creativity that will delight audiences of all ages.
