A jam-packed summer program at Lake Macquarie’s Museum of Art and Culture (MAC) features new family-friendly exhibitions and a range of activities for all ages.

Opening December 5, Body Language explores the diverse practices of First Nations artists across place and communities. On tour from the National Gallery of Australia, the exhibition explores language as expressed through symbols and patterns.

To celebrate the opening, MAC will host a cultural celebration day on Saturday 5 December, including a smoking ceremony, opportunities to learn more about the Awabakal language through song and dance and a first look at the exhibition. Bookings are essential.

The Art in Your Community: Water exhibition opening Sunday 6 December is inspired by the saltwater lake that surrounds MAC. The exhibition will feature water- themed works from local creatives.

Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said it was important that MAC’s waterfront location was reflected in its exhibition programming and collection development.

“The lake is the heart of our City and we are excited for the community to see that reflected through artistic practice,” Ms Hemsley said.

The much-anticipated annual exhibition of First Class will take place Saturday 13 February. In its 13th year, the project celebrates the high calibre work produced by top HSC students from the Hunter and Central Coast.

“To complement our exhibitions, there will also be a number of workshops, activities and school holiday events occurring at MAC over summer,” Ms Hemsley said.

“Lake Mac is an engaged community and we are excited to share our latest program with everyone.”
