Maitland City Council has introduced a new Community Gardens Framework, providing a clear and accessible process for residents and community groups to create and manage community gardens on Council-managed land.

The framework includes clear guidelines and resources to help interested groups navigate the process, from planning and design to long-term management.

A list of pre-identified sites has also been developed to streamline applications, with Council offering additional support through consultation meetings and resources to ensure community gardens are set up for success.

Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said the framework is a direct response to growing community interest in establishing local gardens and reflects Council’s commitment to fostering sustainable and connected neighbourhoods.

“Community gardens offer more than just a space to grow food – they bring people together, provide opportunities for learning new skills and create beautiful, shared spaces.

“This framework will provide the tools and support our community needs to turn their gardening ideas into reality while promoting sustainability and local food security.”

The Community Gardens Framework outlines a clear, easy-to-follow application process, including guidelines, a risk assessment template and tips on garden design. The list of pre-identified sites helps expedite the application process, but groups can also apply for other sites if desired, with a site suitability assessment required.

Applications are now open for community groups and interested residents. For more information on how to start a community garden, visit mait.city/CommunityGarden or contact Council’s Community Planning team for assistance.
