Recognition for Dedicated Volunteers

For close to three years, ARTea’s Gallery and Garden has encouraged the Lake Macquarie community to celebrate its talents, connect, learn and grow.

Last month, the social enterprise of Swansea Community Cottage Inc, led by an amazing team of volunteers, was recognised by Lake Macquarie City Council as a finalist in the 2021 Lake Mac Awards. ARTea’s is one of six finalists in the Lake Mac Community Group of the Year category.

ARTea’s houses a gallery, garden, gift shop, tearooms and venue space. The gallery and gift shop displays works by local artists and hobbyists (which can also be purchased) and local and pre-loved creations. There are natives, bush tucker, herbs, indoor plants, and fresh vegies for sale in the garden and nursery. The tearooms serve Devonshire Teas and light snacks by donation, and the renovated 1833 chapel is open to the public (unless in use for a community event, workshop or private function.)

Swansea Community Cottage project manager Susan MacNeill said this was an outstanding recognition for all of the volunteers.

“There is a group of amazing people that are our backbone. Our volunteers look after the community garden, art space, gift shop, tearooms and serve the most delicious Devonshire teas,” said Ms MacNeill.

“About 20 volunteers give their time regularly over the four-day week. They share their skills and time with like-minded people giving back to their community on a regular basis.”

ARTea’s Gallery and Garden can be found at 28 Josephson Street, Swansea, and is open from Wednesday to Saturday (10am to 2pm).
