Premier sports destination planned for Port Stephens

Port Stephens Council has unanimously adopted the revised Tomaree Sports Complex Masterplan, setting the pathway for a premier sports hub.

The revised Masterplan, endorsed at the 26 May 2026 Council Meeting, outlines the community’s vision for how the Complex could transform into a destination sporting hub. The upgraded complex will be capable of hosting major multi-day events and meet growing demand for indoor sports and thriving female sports.  

The plan responds directly to community feedback, including local sports clubs and regional sporting associations, and was made possible through a joint funding arrangement between Port Stephens Council and the Tomaree Sports Council.

Further upgrade opportunities have also been outlined to enhance usability through flexible multi-use fields and modern amenities to improve the experience for all.

Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said elevating Port Stephens into a premier sporting destination would help attract major sporting events and offer long-term economic benefits for the region.

“Our endorsement of this revised Masterplan is another major step in securing additional funding streams to realise our community’s vision for a flagship sporting hub in Port Stephens,” Mayor Anderson said.

“Hosting major sporting events that attract thousands of visitors would not only create a buzz across the region but also increase spend with local businesses including accommodation providers, hospitality venues, retailers, and tour operators. 

“The community, including local sports clubs, made it clear the addition of a new indoor facility along with modern, safe and accessible amenities that provide for the needs of all ages, genders and abilities is vital.”

“Masterplans like this set the framework for how we deliver on our promise to ensure Port Stephens remains a highly competitive and attractive place to invest, visit, live, and play,” Mayor Anderson said.

East Ward Councillors have welcomed the endorsement, calling it a major community win that secures the future of the Peninsula's sports grounds, facilities, and local clubs.

“Following the council motion passed last year, it’s great to see a clear future path for updated amenities, better traffic flow, and parking. This plan delivers a vision for a much-needed all-weather venue to cater for a wide range of indoor sports, as well as the potential for much-needed upgrades to our aquatic complex,” Councillor Watson said.

“Our local sports clubs and young athletes do a fantastic job representing Port Stephens. This plan is all about giving them the quality grounds and accessible facilities they deserve," Councillor Nathan Errington said.

“This complex plays an essential role in keeping our community connected, active, and healthy. This is a great step forward because it ensures we can provide the sporting facilities needed to meet our local needs now and into the future,” Councillor Armstrong said.

The original Masterplan was adopted in 2018 and has already resulted in the delivery of key developments including the $3.2 million Bruce Scott Pavilion for sports and youth services.

It will also see the planned $7.8 million upgrade to Don Waring Oval with expanded sporting fields, improved pedestrian access including a Sports Walk and viewing platforms, and two new car parks and a roundabout to improve access and flow.
