Opera Australia breathes new life into the world's favourite love story

opera

On a freezing Christmas Eve, love sparks. Two hands meet in the dark and four friends’ lives change forever…

La Bohème, the original bohemian love story that has influenced productions like RENT and Moulin Rouge, comes to the majestic Civic Theatre Newcastle for one night only in August.

Opera Australia's latest tour features exquisite young talent, such as Novocastrian Danita Weatherstone as the lead female, Mimi (Soprano). Backed by a live chamber Orchestra, with a special appearance by The Hunter Trebles children's choir, the music alone will ascend audiences - portraying the ecstasy of love, crackling with the pain of jealousy, and crying with the agony of loss.

Puccini's operas have stood the test of time. La Bohème's score captures the soaring spirit of young love, and this new production breathes fresh life into one of the world’s favourites. Award-winning director Dean Bryant (Anything Goes, Sweet Charity) brings his trademark wit and vivacity to this new staging, which captures that giddy moment where you and your friends feel you'll live forever. Award-winning Set & Costume Designer Isabel Hudson elevates the modern staging with bohemian inspired dress.

For those wanting to dip their toe into opera, this simple love story, combined with the memorable repertoire, is the perfect sampler. When Mimì meets Rodolfo, it’s love at first touch. They head out to bustling Café Momus, where the feisty Musetta and Marcello rekindle their relationship. But even the deepest love can’t warm a freezing winter.

Opera Australia's La Bohème is just one of the big productions to roll through Newcastle this year. Tickets are selling fast.
