The Escadia Newcastle Northstars have kicked off the season in style, claiming a thrilling home victory on Saturday before backing it up with a win on the road on Sunday.
On Saturday night, the Northstars defeated the Canberra Brave 7-5 in front of a sell-out crowd at home — a game that had it all, including an ejection, an empty netter, and a moment of franchise history. Less than a minute into the third period, Francis Drolet scored his 102nd goal as a Newcastle Northstar, making him the highest scorer in franchise history and breaking an 11-year record held by Brian Bales.
The Northstars then travelled to Sydney on Sunday, defeating the Bears 3-1 at Macquarie Ice Rink to claim all six points for the weekend.
Captain Liam Manwarring said the team was building momentum early in the season.
"It's a gritty win, everyone played hard, and the young guys got some time at the start. There's a massive rivalry between us and the Brave and this one feels really good, especially as the season is getting started."
Head Coach Kevin Noble said the character in the squad was shining through.
"There's a lot of character in that room, a bond and the right mix — a really good feeling in there which makes them care and take a lot of pride in their game. It's never easy in sport to be a winning organisation year after year, and our guys from Francis, Liam and Wehebe care about the city, the community and being the best version of themselves."
