Newcastle Grammar School's Anastasia the Musical Set to Captivate Audiences
Based on the beloved animated film, the hit Broadway show Anastasia the Musical will be presented at the Civic Theatre Newcastle from 17 to 19 August. The enchanting production takes audiences on a journey to the past through Europe in the 1920s.
"Our students are excited to bring Anastasia to life. The students and the staff have all shown incredible commitment to taking the production above and beyond and really building on the success of previous years. We’re especially thrilled to return to the Civic Theatre to bring the best of Newcastle Grammar’s young performing talent to our city’s premiere arts venue,” said Executive Producer, Musical Director and Newcastle Grammar School’s Director of Music, Kevin Young.
Anastasia, a fictional twist on the events of the downfall of the Russian monarchy, tells the tale of self-discovery and belonging. Events are set in motion by the reported escape of the Grand Duchess of Russia, daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, from the fate of her family at the hands of the Bolshevik revolution. When two lovable conmen hear of a reward posted by Anastasia’s exiled grandmother, they conspire to find a convincing imposter to claim the reward for her capture. They discover Anya – an orphan with amnesia who bears a striking resemblance to the missing princess.
Newcastle Grammar School’s major musical productions draw audience members from across the Hunter region, with outstanding performances supported by gorgeous costumes, spectacular sets and thrilling live music. Director Luke Aspinall says: “The level of production the students and staff are bringing to these shows is exciting. The students have set out to challenge themselves, and I think the audience will be amazed to see them really soar.”
