NATIONAL BEACH 5s RUGBY TOURNAMENT HITS NEWCASTLE
Beach 5s Rugby - an exciting, entertaining and fast-paced game of modified Rugby League, Rugby Union and Touch Football is being played at Nobbys Beach in Newcastle on the 24-26 January 2021.
Star players, Lote Tuqiri, Owen Craigie, Danny Buderus, Willie Mason and Robbie O’Davis will be headlining the Beach 5s Rugby Festival presented by City of Newcastle.
Event Director, Peter Hickey, said that the tournament will bring a great atmosphere and free entertainment to families in Newcastle.
“The event has proven to be extremely successful in Queensland, so we are very excited to launch into NSW and to be holding our first tournament in Newcastle next year,” Mr Hickey said.
“Newcastle is very passionate about sport so it will be great to see the tournament bring that level of excitement and the great atmosphere to Nobbys Beach.
“Newcastle can expect an exciting weekend with lots of entertainment, music, sport and their favourite league and union players,” he said.
“Beach 5s Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe, so to have it in Newcastle next year is really exciting,” he said.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Natuali Nelmes welcomed the opportunity to host the Beach 5s Rugby Festival at the city’s iconic Nobbys Beach.
“With much of the City’s 2020 major events calendar disrupted due to COVID-19, it is fantastic to kick off 2021 hosting such an entertaining tournament like Beach 5s Rugby Festival,” Cr Nelmes said.
“City of Newcastle is supporting Beach 5’s Australia Day Festival 2021 with $30,000 in sponsorship from the Major Event Development Fund.
“We are thrilled that Newcastle is the first New South Wales location to host the new hybrid football tournament and Nobbys Beach offers an idyllic vantage point for spectators to soak up all the excitement of the City’s Australia Day long weekend programme,” she said.
Beach 5s Rugby is a contact, fast paced sport where stamina, tactics and ball handling skills are the basis of an exciting game for both the players and spectators.
