The Very Popular Theatre Company’s Mamma Mia! has achieved a milestone that will be remembered in the city’s performing arts history: over 21,000 people attended the 2025 season at Civic Theatre Newcastle, breaking all attendance records for a local theatre producer on the main stage. This figure is on par with touring professional productions such as Come From Away in 2023.

The two-and-a-half-week run of the world’s favourite feel-good musical brought joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments to audiences of all ages. Featuring ABBA’s greatest hits, the production had theatre-goers singing and dancing along, creating an electric atmosphere that earned standing ovations night after night.

“This has been a dream come true,” said Producer Daniel Stoddart.

“Not only did we welcome record-breaking audiences, but we were also able to achieve one of our biggest goals - paying our entire cast. It’s a huge step toward building a truly professional theatre company right here in the Hunter region.”

The cast, led by Erin Cornell as Donna and Matt Edwards as Sam, brought powerhouse vocals, heartfelt performances, and infectious energy to the stage. The production team, including director Erin James and musical director Dan Wilson, ensured every performance was of the highest professional standard, while also nurturing emerging local talent.

“Seeing our audiences sing, dance, and celebrate with us every night was incredible,” said Daniel. “The energy was electric, and the joy on people’s faces reminded us why we do what we do - theatre is for everyone, and this show was a perfect example of that.”

The production’s success marks a significant moment for the Hunter region, demonstrating the potential for high-quality, locally-produced theatre to rival touring professional productions. The Very Popular Theatre Company thanks every audience member who came along to make this season truly special and unforgettable.
