Major investment and key city priorities set to go on public exhibition

The community is invited to provide feedback on Council’s draft Operational Plan and Budget 2026-2027, after it was approved to go on public exhibition at tonight’s Council meeting.

The draft plan outlines a $393.2 million budget, including more than $111 million in capital works.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the plan will keep the city on course to maintain a diverse and thriving economy while retaining our quality of life and connection to nature.

“As the third fastest growing regional area in Australia, we are well placed for a strong future, and this plan sets out the actions that will help us get there,” Mayor Adam said.

Big winners from the capital works program include the dredging of Swansea Channel, swim centre upgrades at West Wallsend and Charlestown, and road rehabilitation projects at Dudley, Mandalong, Belmont North and Morisset.

The plan also outlines 127 actions aligned to the city’s long‑term economic, environmental, social and governance goals outlined in the Community Strategic Plan.

“Caring for the environment remains a priority as we expand the Awaba Waste Management Facility to extend its life by 11 years and support businesses that reduce waste and promote a circular economy.”

Road sealing, resurfacing and rehabilitation has the largest bucket of funds at $29.1 million, while business support carries $13.5 million and community and sporting upgrades hold $10 million.

“Investment is also proposed across beaches, aquatic facilities, community and sporting venues, parks, bridges and more to support a growing and connected city.”

“We value community feedback and ask residents to take a look at the draft plan and let us know whether we’ve captured the right mix of services, upgrades and long-term priorities,” Mayor Adam said.

Councillors also approved the draft Lake Macquarie Waste and Circular Materials Strategy to go out on public exhibition until 4 May 2026.

The draft plan responds to rising waste volumes, increasing disposal costs and the need to plan for the finite remaining landfill capacity at the Awaba Waste Management Facility.

Councillors also approved minor updates to the Investment Policy and endorsed a refreshed framework that governs Joint Organisations.
