Maitland’s winter solstice celebration, Luminous, will return to The Levee Central Maitland on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June 2026, bringing back the magic of fire and ice through light installations, immersive experiences and a brand-new pop-up ice skating rink.
Fast becoming a much-loved winter tradition, the free two-night event invites locals and visitors to experience interactive light displays, live entertainment, specialty food, pop-up bars and spectacular fireworks.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold said Luminous has quickly established itself as a standout on Maitland’s annual events calendar, offering a unique way for the community to come together and celebrate the season.
“What began as a new way to celebrate the winter solstice is quickly becoming a tradition people look forward to each year - an opportunity to gather with family and friends, support local businesses and enjoy the atmosphere in the heart of our city.
“This year’s program is bigger and more immersive than ever, with exciting new experiences including a pop-up ice skating rink, alongside returning favourites like live artisan demonstrations and our spectacular fireworks finale,” Mayor Penfold said.
Visitors can explore a series of glowing light displays throughout The Levee, including the ‘Ice Cathedral’, an immersive walk-through installation inspired by frozen architecture and winter landscapes. The installation features large, illuminated arches, with light elements overhead and surrounding the walkway.
A new addition for 2026 is the pop-up ice skating rink at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, offering visitors the chance to extend their Luminous experience with skating sessions, food and drink, and a relaxed winter atmosphere just a short walk from the main event precinct.
Across both nights, the event will feature live music and performances from local and regional artists, along with roving entertainment. Visitors can also enjoy live artisan demonstrations, including Raku firing with Dunes Pottery and glass sculpting with Anna’s Glass, as well as family -friendly activities such as UV face painting.
For those looking to relax and soak up the atmosphere, ‘Boydells on Bourke’ will return with boutique wines and sparkling beverages, while 'Bulwer Street Bites' will offer a curated selection of local flavours, food trucks and stalls, and comforting winter treats.
The much-loved fireworks display will return to The Levee, lighting up the skies above Central Maitland on Saturday 20 June at 8pm, as a standout moment of this year’s program.
Luminous will run from 5pm to 8pm on Friday 19 June and from 3pm to 8pm on Saturday 20 June, with free entry on both days. Ice skating sessions will run from Friday to Sunday. Tickets, session times and prices will be released soon.
