Swansea and Speers Point swim centres will reopen on Monday 27 September in line with the NSW Government’s revised COVID-19 health rules. Morisset Swim Centre is also set to open from Thursday 30 September initially between the hours of 9am to 4pm.

Council’s Manager Leisure Services Brad Sutton said he was excited to see the three venues reopen as warmer weather approached.

“We’ve received a number of requests from the community about opening our swim centres, but unfortunately the previous public health order prevented us from doing so,” Mr Sutton said.

“We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust whenever and wherever required to ensure our pools comply with health guidelines and are safe and enjoyable venues for everyone.”

Charlestown Swim Centre will remain closed until November while maintenance works are completed on the 25m and 50m pools. West Wallsend and Toronto swim centres will also remain closed, with the easing of restrictions only applying to outdoor pools.

Leisure Operations Coordinator Paul Stone said he was proud of the efforts of swim centre staff throughout the pandemic.

“Coordinating the reopening of our swim centres while maintaining a COVID-safe environment is a complex task, made possible by dedicated, passionate staff,” Mr Stone said.

“We’ve worked through the new COVID-safe plan, which was released by the NSW Government yesterday afternoon (23 September), and we are excited to be able to open our doors from Monday in accordance with a number of new requirements.”

If visiting a swim centre, users are asked to:

  • check Council’s website for opening hours

  • maintain 1.5m physical distance from all people including staff

  • wash or sanitise your hands upon entry and regularly after that

  • follow the centre’s signage and conditions of entry along with staff directions

  • come swim-ready

  • remember to wear a face mask when not in the water (this includes all outdoor areas)

  • remember to QR code in.

“Please do not attend if you are unwell or have any signs of cold or flu, including a cough, sore/scratchy throat, runny nose, shortness of breath or fever,” Mr Stone said.

“If staff observe any of these symptoms, you will be asked to leave immediately.”
