Lake Mac’s Green Screenings highlight environmental issues

A free movie series kicking off in Lake Mac this month is set to tackle the big environmental issues of our planet, including climate change, ecosystem loss and the impact of large-scale farming.
Green Screenings will feature a series of four free environmentally themed documentaries, screened at Lake Cinema, Boolaroo, over the next four months.
The 2020 documentary Kiss the Ground starring Woody Harrelson will debut the series on Tuesday 17 May, exploring ways to heal the planet through regenerative farming.
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Community Partnerships Andrew Bryant said Green Screenings would highlight how we can improve our environmental landscape.
“The documentaries in this year’s series are hand-picked to provide people of all ages with the knowledge and inspiration to connect on a local and global scale to bring about change,” Mr Bryant said.
“One film will be played each month for four months, starting in May.”
All screenings will be followed by a Q&A session from local sustainability advocates, with the first to be led by Tree Frog Permaculture expert Lachie Storrie.
“If we keep going the way we are, the environment is going to be harder and harder to grow food in, so my aim is to help people grow their own food and products in the most environmentally friendly way,” Mr Storrie said.
Other films in the series include When the River Runs Dry, The Green Lie and Together We Grow.
“We’re really excited to be delivering these films, to engage locals in sustainable practises and spread awareness of sustainable issues our region and world is facing today,” Mr Bryant said.
“When the River Runs Dry sees Indigenous elders and locals unravel how the Darling River’s water has been overallocated and irrigated for decades.
“Meanwhile, The Green Lie explores the role of big corporations and advertising in our purchases, while Together We Grow provides a case study for developing strong, connected, resilient communities”
Tickets are free, but bookings for each film screening are essential.
