The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) is giving Australians the opportunity to thank nurses for their efforts in 2020 through its inaugural It’s Time for Nurses 24-hour Giving Day on Wednesday, 2 December.

Nurses have led from the front in guiding Australia through a devastating series of natural disasters and navigating the health, economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nurses, the backbone of the Australian health system, make up more than half of the Australian health care workforce. Supporting nurses through scholarship opportunities allows them to keep investing in their education so that they can continue to provide the quality care that we know they deliver to our communities.

Chief Executive Officer of ACN, Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward FACN, said that supporting nurses was more important than ever after an incredibly challenging 2020 which saw nurses on the front lines, fighting a global pandemic.

“I know just how challenging 2020 has been for all Australians. Nurse are the clinical profession most likely to live in the communities they serve. Donating to the ACN Foundation’s “It’s Time for Nurses” Giving Day on 2 December will significantly support a nurse to personally and professionally develop, and in turn is an investment in local communities. People keep asking me how that can say thank you to nurses and this is the perfect opportunity as all donations on this Day will directly support Australian nurses,” Adjunct Professor Ward said.

Donations to “It’s Time for Nurses” Giving Day on Wednesday, 2 December will ensure 50 Australian nurses will each have access to a new scholarship of up to $5,000 in 2021.

Australian nurses need to have access to educational opportunities to support them to deliver health care throughout Australia’s vast land. Every year thousands of nurses miss out on these opportunities because there are not enough scholarships to meet the need and demand.

“I know the difference a scholarship can make to so many nurses. Scholarship recipients want to continue to grow and further their contribution to our community and investing in their education and professional development is an investment in our healthcare system,” Adjunct Professor Ward said.
