Get ready, Newcastle — the gods are coming. This August, Hunter Drama presents The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at The Playhouse, Civic Theatre Newcastle, marking the show’s long-awaited local premiere.

Based on the bestselling novel by Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief explodes onto the stage from 7 to 16 August with a high-energy production that blends mythology, mayhem, monsters, and music. Directed by acclaimed local theatre-maker Lauren Harvey and musically directed by performer and vocal coach Marty Worrall, the show stars a dynamic young cast drawn from Hunter Drama’s renowned performance training programs.

The story follows Percy Jackson, a seemingly average teenager who discovers he’s actually a demigod — the son of Poseidon. What follows is a whirlwind quest across the United States to recover Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt, prevent a war among the gods, and survive an onslaught of mythological monsters, all while figuring out where he belongs.

“This cast is phenomenal, it’s the reason I signed on,” says Harvey.

“There’s action, heart, humour, and magic. We’re turning The Playhouse into a mythical battlefield, and the audience will be right in the middle of it.”

Musical Director Marty Worrall promises a rock-driven score and a story that celebrates diversity and difference. “The themes of neurodiversity and identity are already built into this show, and our cast brings those ideas to life with authenticity and power. Plus… monsters. Did I mention the monsters?”

With just 11 performances and strong interest from schools and fans of the book series, tickets are expected to sell fast.

Whether you’re a die-hard Percy Jackson fan or discovering Camp Half-Blood for the first time, The Lightning Thief promises an unforgettable ride. Expect laughs, thrills, heartfelt moments, and one epic adventure.
