Sporting clubs in Maitland’s west will have top-tier facilities at their disposal this season, with a $3.1 million amenities building now open at Max McMahon Oval in Rutherford.
Funded by the Australian Government under the Investing in Our Communities Program, with contributions from Maitland City Council, the new building features four unisex changerooms and accessible public amenities, a canteen, first aid and referee rooms, a timekeeping room and tiered seating.
Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold says the new facilities “are a game-changer for local clubs and players.”
“We’re proud to deliver these new and improved amenities for sporting groups in west Maitland, particularly Maitland Saints AFL Club and Western Suburbs Cricket Club, who helped us come up with the most suitable design and were instrumental in securing the grant funding,” Mayor Penfold said.
“Both sports are growing in popularity in our community and now, they have the supporting facilities they need to grow into the future.”
Federal Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson MP says, "I made a $3 million commitment to this project during the 2022 election because I know how important Max McMahon Oval is to families and sporting clubs in Maitland’s west. It is a long-awaited upgrade, and I am proud to back it.
“This commitment is now delivered - with modern, accessible amenities that support players, officials and spectators alike. It’s an investment in participation, community pride and the future of our local sport.”
The new facilities will be open to local clubs for training and match days, offering major accessibility improvements to players and the wider community.
