Immerse yourself in nature and snap some cool shots as you discover Lake Macquarie’s great outdoors this summer holidays to win some epic loot.

Lake Macquarie City Council’s Explore Our Great Outdoors program returns with a raft of fun activities on the water and in the bush, along with nature photography competitions for kids and adults.

Go-Pros and a swag of prizes are in the offing for images of ‘things that grow and move’ and ‘our great outdoors’ in a summer-long photo contest judged by local nature snapper David Diehm.

Mr Diehm said his work was about capturing the world’s true beauty through a personal lens and encouraged others to discover their own creative niche.

“My photography is an expression of my connection with nature,” he said.

“With a camera in hand, I capture and document the ever-changing beauty around us, often in Lake Macquarie, aiming to preserve moments in time and produce images that inspire and resonate with others.

“As a photographer, try to be present in the moment. Immerse yourself in your surroundings and enjoy the experience. Don’t overthink or force the shot; let the image come to you naturally.”

Explore Our Great Outdoors also features rockpool rambles, adventure kayaking, bird watching at Belmont, Aboriginal cultural tours, fun with flying-foxes and more.

Council Coordinator Sustainability Engagement Chris Harle said the new ‘sea turtles and sandcastles’ activity, run by Hunter Wildlife Rescue at Blacksmiths Beach, would be a popular addition to the program.

“Families will learn all about the incredible world of sea turtles and the role they play in Lake Macquarie’s aquatic wonderworld,” she said.

“After learning all about the mysterious lives of our local turtles, families will create their own sea turtle sandcastles, with a prize for the creation that best reflects how we can help our local turtles thrive.”
