Lake Macquarie City Council will invest more than $30,000 annually in emerging local talent under a new sponsorship program designed to help high-performing young people reach their full potential.

The Youth Excellence Sponsorship (YES!) program will offer grants of up to $1000 for teams or groups, or $300 for individuals participating in high-level or elite competition across sport, science, arts, technology and academia.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the program, open to Lake Macquarie residents aged under 18, reflected Council’s commitment to fostering talent and breaking down financial barriers.

“We know the cost of competing at an elite level can be a major hurdle for families,” he said.

“This program ensures our young people have the chance to shine on the biggest stages and represent Lake Macquarie with pride.”

Applicants must demonstrate exceptional achievement and commitment in their chosen field, providing evidence such as awards, rankings or invitations to high-level events.

Emerging Lake Macquarie track and field and football star Mackenzie Preston-Poole welcomed the new program, citing the lack of funding for young high achievers.

“It does cost a lot of money for my family,” the 15-year-old said.

“There’s the travel, all the new clothes, the shoes and other things. The older athletes can get sponsorships, but it’s a lot harder when you’re younger so this would be a big help.”

The program, worth $32,000 a year, also prioritises inclusion, supporting diverse pathways and inspiring community pride through youth success stories.
