Comedy, Connection and Learning | 2024 SENIORS FESTIVAL
Community connection and lifelong learning are at the heart of Newcastle's annual festival celebrating seniors as part of the state-wide NSW Senior's Festival.
With the theme 'Reach Beyond', close to 40 events and activities will be held across the city from 11 -24 March 2024 delivered by City of Newcastle (CN) and a range of community organisations.
The festival kicks off on Monday, 11 March 2024, with the Comedy Gala and Expo at City Hall. Headlined by Jean Kittson, the Comedy Gala is guaranteed to entertain ahead of an afternoon of talks and demonstrations sure to pique the interest of the young at heart. Alongside the flagship Comedy Gala and Seniors Expo at City Hall, there will be a range of events, including a travel writing workshop with renowned author Bruce Elder at Wallsend Library and a saucy science lecture with Newcastle Museum's resident scientist.
The Expo is a one-stop shop to connect with community groups and services that support positive aging, connection, and well-being in Newcastle. Tickets for the Comedy Gala are on sale via the Civic Theatre. In addition to the City of Newcastle events, a wide selection of community-led activities, lectures and workshops will be included as part of this year's festival program, including pickleball matches, Tai Chi classes, line dancing lessons, handbell ringing demonstrations, and cake decorating sessions.
The breadth of events in this year's program, tailored to different interests and abilities, are designed to encourage seniors to 'reach beyond' and try something or meet someone new. There is nothing like the joy of discovery and the satisfaction of acquiring new skills. Opportunities for sharing knowledge and gaining knowledge are many and varied.
The importance of continual learning and connection cannot be underestimated, which is why the festival plays such a significant role in the mental health and well-being of seniors in our community.
