A woman with curly blonde hair smiles in front of a wooden sign reading "MAC." She's wearing a maroon blouse, with plants in the background.

The Museum of Art and Culture, yapang, has launched the richest open acquisitive art prize in regional NSW, with $30,000 cash on offer for the winning work.

The MAC yapang Art Prize is open to artists across any medium and marks the first time in the city’s history a competition has offered such an amount for a single work of art.

The total prize pool is $40,000, including a $5000 ‘yapang Award’ for an artwork by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artist, and a $5000 ‘Lake Mac Award’ for an artwork by a Lake Macquarie artist.

“The value of MAC yapang’s permanent collection is already about $3 million,” MAC yapang Art Producer Jasmine Kean said.

“The MAC yapang Art Prize will add to that figure, but equally importantly it will strengthen our city’s understanding and appreciation of art and culture.”

The prize is open to artists from all disciplines across Australia.

Ms Kean said a judging panel would select finalists and winners, whose works would form the MAC yapang Art Prize exhibition from 18 October to 7 December.

“I’m really excited to see the variety of entries, limited only by the artists’ imagination, creativity and skill,” she said.

Entries close on 30 July. For more information go to mac.lakemac.com.au
