Mayor’s Christmas appeal launches for 2020

Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser invites the Lake Macquarie community to share the joy of Christmas with those less fortunate by donating to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal for 2020.

This year there is even more of an emphasis placed on the importance of giving to those most in need in our community because of the impacts of COVID-19 on many families across our region.

Cr Fraser launched the appeal this morning together with the Samaritans. This year’s appeal is a little different to previous years, due to COVID-19, with the Samaritans asking people to instead donate money or gift cards for the same value as what people may have traditionally spent on toy or food donations.

“We know that many families across our region have felt the impacts of COVID-19 this year. More people in our community are reaching out for support than ever before from organisations like the Samaritans and OzHarvest,” Cr Fraser said.

With COVID-19 restrictions in mind, Council has worked with the Samaritans to offer a range of options for people to donate this year, including via a secure online donation portal, by donating gift cards or dropping off unwrapped gifts or food donations to Council or any of the Lake Mac Libraries.

“All of the donations, whether it is money, vouchers or toys and gifts will relieve some of the pressure on families and individuals who are facing hardship or financial challenges, and allow them to enjoy Christmas,” added Cr Fraser.

“It is important for us to look beyond our own circle, especially at this time of year, and think about how we can help others in our community and spread the goodwill of the season. This year it’s even more important we remember those doing it tough and I encourage all our Lake Mac residents to get involved in any way they can.”

The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal will continue up until Monday 7 December. Visit chuffed.org/fundraiser/lakemac to donate online directly to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and contribute to reaching our donation target of $1000.

Unwrapped gifts and other donated items can be dropped off at Council’s Administrative Centre in Speers Point or at any of the Lake Mac Libraries.
