Help make Lake Mac even better for kids

Lake Mac is home to over 55,000 families, and 31,000 children aged under 12, and in order to support these growing families, Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking community input to develop its 2021-2025 Children and Families Strategy.

Community Planner Children and Families Jess Salvador said the strategy was an essential framework for considering and protecting the needs of our youngest residents.

“We want to work collaboratively with the community, and most importantly with children, to ensure their voices are reflected in the strategy,” Ms Salvador said.

One of the ways to contribute is through a Council-run social media competition. Up for grabs is a Dullboys Social Co. Family Fun Pass valued at $220.

“All you need to do is upload a photo with a description on how to improve life in Lake Mac for kids and families, and tag the post using #letshoptoitlakemac,” Ms Salvador said.

Entries close Friday 31 July, with the best photo and post taking out the family experience prize.

“As well as the competition, we will be hosting two live webinars at 10am and 7pm on Thursday 6 August to talk with families about the strategy,” Ms Salvador said.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser said the strategy would set the direction for Council in how best to support, protect and enhance the lives of children and families.

“Our current Children and Families Strategy will conclude at the end of the year, so it is time to develop a new plan for supporting and enhancing the lives of children and families in Lake Macquarie,” Cr Fraser said.

“We want to ensure our youngest and most vulnerable are supported, and we need to protect the safety of all children in our City."

Building on the previous strategy, the forward actions aim to target three strategic directions: keeping children safe, ensuring kids are developing well and connecting families and communities. Consultation for the strategy is open until Friday 14 August.
